Gap years are a popular activity for students. A well spent gap year can improve communication skills, teach students how to stick to a tight budget, broaden social and intellectual horizons and aid the transition from home to university life. For some, a year out can provide the time and space needed to analyse their skills and decide which university and course will allow them to reach their full potential.
Many sixth form students choose to defer their entry to university for a year and take a gap year. We help students to decide whether a gap year is right for them, arrange deferred university entry and provide some assistance to students who are organising their travels. There are a wide range of different gap year options including: volunteer placements, training courses, teaching placements, language courses, work placements, expeditions, conservation placements and community projects.
Lucy Margeson spent most of her gap year working for the Launceston Church Grammar School, in Australia. Here is one of the reports she sent back to Princess Helena College during her time working at the School:
“My job title is officially a teacher assistant, but we're never called that - we're just called Gappies! We are all placed in an area of the school that we have interests and talents in where we can help the staff. So I am in the sports department most of the time and I also help out in any other area of the school that needs me. We help out in the boarding house, as that's where we live, by doing a wake up one day a week - obviously just waking the girls up and making sure they get up for school! I also do prep duty, once or twice a week, supervising the kids in the evening during their prep time. We also get to go on a few outdoor education camps which are so much fun - they have a very strong outdoor education department here. We have been to Maria Island, Port Arthur, and tomorrow we're going to Cradle Mountain. The kids all love it too which is great - a real learning curve and they have to mix with their year which is great too.
I would really recommend doing a gap year to anyone, its so much fun and a really worthwhile experience.”
