History of the School

The Princess Helena College was established in 1820 as one of England's first academic schools for girls. We are extremely proud of our heritage and aim to maintain high academic standards and respect for traditional values.

The school was founded for the orphaned daughters of members of the forces and clergy. We now encourage this tradition by offering bursaries to daughters of clergy and Forces families.

The College took its name from Queen Victoria's third daughter, Princess Helena, who became its President in 1874. Since this time we have enjoyed the patronage of royalty; the Queen is our Patron and HRH The Duchess of Gloucester is our President.
