Exploring Art

Year 8: British Museum

Year 8 had a busy but fantastic time at the British Museum on Wednesday and enjoyed looking at the Egyptian artefacts on permanent display. They did lots of drawings of the mummies and looked at the intricate patterns and designs carved and painted on to the tombs. We even saw the remains of a few mummies. The highlight of the trip was the 'Egyptian Journey to the Afterlife' - a temporary exhibition. The girls enjoyed learning about the gods and the Book of the Dead with all the spells that were believed to help you into the 'Field of Reeds'. They are now excited about their Egyptian art project and putting everything that they have learnt into their own work back at school.

Year 9: The Tate Modern

On Tuesday, Year 9 had a great time looking around the Tate Modern. There was a wide variety of artwork to see and something to suit everyone's taste. They especially enjoyed the contemporary display using everyday objects within the artwork, and they did lots of drawings in their sketchbooks. To help with their project on Constructivism, the girls looked for work using modern materials and strong geometrical shapes and images, to provide inspiration for the hats they are making in class.

Year 10: The V&A

On Monday, the Year 10 art students had an inspirational day at the V&A. They were given a fascinating tour of several pieces of work with the focus on Pattern to help them with their project on Surfaces. They looked at everything from traditional Islamic designs to the wallpapers of William Morris. The girls all came away with lots of ideas for their skirt designs.

Years 11, 12 & 13: The Saatchi Gallery

On Thursday, the Year 11, 12 and 13 art students went for a day out to visit The Saatchi Gallery in London. They saw a fantastic collection of contemporary artwork from a range of British artists and had a tour of several pieces of work. The girls were busy all day, doing lots of sketches and analysing the artwork on display. It was a busy and tiring day but the girls returned to school feeling inspired, with many new ideas for their school work.
