Year 12 Economics pupils are taking part in the IFS Student Investor Challenge as part of an extension to their work. The girls have formed two teams and are investing their "virtual cash pile" of £100,000 in a set of shares which they will be trading until 4 February 2011.
The Haribo investment club has concentrated on food and drink companies in the run up to Christmas and has seen significant growth in their Domino's Pizza shares. The Big Apple team, who reached the top 300 last week, have concentrated on the mining sector and their best performing share was the Xstrat mining company, which is up 11% week on week.
Ms Parton (who is managing the Northern Lights portfolio with Ms Poston) explained how this enriched the girls' study: "they are really benefiting from putting the theories into practice and the Challenge great for extending everyone's business knowledge".
Watch out for regular updates on the teams' portfolios:
Latest News:
Theree are only two weeks left until the end of Student Investor Challenge. I am a member of the Big Apple team and our position in the league is not so good. The recent oil and gas leakages have affected our shares this week. Haribo have also had a bad week but their position remains in the middle of the league table.
We have all tried our very best and, although we cannot win the trip to New York now, we have enjoyed this competition so much!
