At Mountfitchet, they have reconstructed a Norman motte and bailey castle as it would have been in the 11th century. The girls enjoyed seeing how the baron would have lived and learning about the kinds of jobs people did then and the conditions in which they lived. We then drove on to Castle Hedingham which is a stone castle built in the early 12th century. It is one of the finest Norman keeps in the country. The girls were able to see how castles changed in less then one hundred years.
