English as an Additional Language

Approximately 6% of our girls have English as a foreign language. To help them settle and achieve their academic potential, curriculum support is offered by members of our EAL (English as an Additional Language) Department. Girls take a wide range of examinations including the First Certificate and IELTS.

For full boarders from overseas, the cost of one lesson of EAL per week is included in the fees. For those who are studying essay based subjects at A level, this is increased to two hours in order to give them extra preparation.

Our EAL department is excellent and lessons are normally offered one on one or in small groups. The focus is not just on general language but specifically on helping girls with their curriculum learning. There is also an emphasis on English culture.
