Government and Politics

Government and Politics is offered at AS and A level.

At AS British Politics is covered in all its glories. At A2 we look at American Politics and then look at Comparative Government, concentrating on the British and American experiences.

It is a subject with close links to History but is open to any pupil who reads books and is capable of writing a coherent essay. For example, good Geography students will relate to it. A love of newspapers and current affairs programmes on TV and radio are helpful in a subject that expands each day throughout the two years of study.

With Obama recently elected and 'New' Labour apparently destined for the dustbin of history, new students face genuinely earthmoving changes. Will a new British government overhaul MP's expenses, the voting system and the House of Lords? How will we defeat the Recession?  Can Obama fight global warming, deal with the Middle East and deliver Health Care to the USA? We shall be looking for answers to these questions over the next few years. The Politics department already has an established visit to Berlin each summer, while a visit to Washington is under consideration.
